In a vibrant gathering that fused the rich culture and traditions of Oaxaca, the community of “Oaxaca in Utah” proudly presented the most anticipated event of the year: La Guelaguetza 2023. This celebration, full of color, music, and tradition, took place on July 22 at the picturesque Heritage Park (250 N Fairfield Rd, Kaysville, UT 84037), drawing a crowd of lovers of culture and authenticity.
“Oaxaca in Utah” is a non-profit organization with a clear mission: to share the wealth of the Mexican state of Oaxaca through food, traditions, customs, education, dance, and, above all, love for his people. Founded more than a decade ago, the organization has grown and evolved, carrying with it a passion for preserving and disseminating the rich heritage of Oaxaca.
The Evolution of La Guelaguetza: La Guelaguetza, a traditional holiday with deep meaning, has been at the heart of the “Oaxaca in Utah” approach. From its humble beginning with 7 families united in 2020, the celebration has blossomed in magnitude and meaning. 2021 marked a milestone with the first public Guelaguetza in Utah, which attracted an estimated attendance of 500-550 people. In 2022, the event shined even brighter with the participation of 7,000 enthusiasts, all united to honor and enjoy the vibrant Oaxacan culture.
The word “Guelaguetza” derives from the Zapotec “guendalezaa”, which means “offering, present or fulfillment”. This festival, rooted in Oaxacan traditions, comes to life during the month of July, uniting all regions of the state in an enriching celebration.
La Guelaguetza 2023 was a true festival of the senses. From the intoxicating aromas of typical Oaxacan foods and drinks to the display of unique crafts and cultural goods, every corner of the event exuded authenticity. Dance was the language of the celebration, with a colorful carnival around 5 p.m. that featured dancers dressed in traditional and allegorical costumes.
The climax of the event came with the outstanding participation of Jair Benitez Productions and the acclaimed Sonora Dinamita, who filled the air with contagious rhythms that made everyone move to the music.
The event was led by the organizers of “Oaxaca in Utah”, Norma Carver and Benjamin Carver, who shared their passion for Oaxacan culture with a community that responded enthusiastically.
Guelaguetza 2023 left an indelible mark in the hearts of all attendees. More than an event, it was a tribute to the richness and diversity of Oaxaca, shared with love and pride by the community of “Oaxaca in Utah.”
